What You Will Prepare For
The programme will focus on the knowledge, judgement and operational awareness candidates are expected to develop before progressing through formal Coxswain assessment.
COLREGS
Lookout, risk of collision and basic encounter situations.
Navigation
IALA Region B buoyage, navigation awareness and position awareness.
Weather
Weather awareness, changing conditions and operational judgement.
Safety
Safety equipment, passenger safety and emergency procedures.
VHF Communications
Distress, urgency and safety communication awareness.
Seamanship
Anchoring, lines, knots and fundamental deck practices.
Vessel Operations
Basic operational planning, responsibilities and safe vessel practices.
Exam Preparation
Exam-style questioning, oral preparation and guided revision.
Simulator Based Scenario Training
From Theory to Decision Making
Knowledge is only one part of operating a vessel safely.
Candidates will also work through instructor-led simulator scenarios designed to develop situational awareness, decision making and the ability to explain what they would do when responsible for the vessel. The candidate makes decisions and explains their intended actions while the instructor uses the simulator to demonstrate the developing situation.

Live Online Theory
Instructor-led sessions covering essential Coxswain knowledge with discussion, questioning, exercises and assessment-focused preparation.
Simulator Scenarios
Candidates work through realistic maritime situations requiring them to interpret what is happening, make decisions and explain their intended actions.
Individual Feedback
Each candidate receives individual feedback highlighting strengths, areas requiring further review and recommended next steps.

This programme is not intended to replace practical boating experience.
It is designed for candidates who already have experience operating boats and want structured preparation before progressing through the formal Coxswain training and assessment process.
